Elephant Friendly Crops

As elephants search for food, they often damage farms, leading to financial hardship for farmers and dangerous encounters for both humans and wildlife. To address this issue, we propose small farmers to cultivate crops that are naturally unattractive to elephants.

Studies suggest that strong citrus scents act as a natural elephant deterrent. Based on this, we promote the cultivation of crops such as orange, passion fruit, lemon, lemongrass, ginger, turmeric, basil, and chili. These crops not only reduce elephant intrusions but also provide farmers with an alternative source of income.

We also hope to find markets for the farmers and conduct trainings on value added products and market ourselves as elephant friendly products.

By increasing the profitability of these crops, farmers can earn a sustainable income while reducing their dependence on traditional crops that attract elephants. Capacity-building workshops will be conducted to train farmers in marketing, financial management, and sustainable agricultural practices, ensuring long-term economic stability.

In addition to economic benefits, the project promotes organic farming, reducing the use of harmful chemicals and preserving soil quality and biodiversity. Healthier soil leads to better crop yields, while organic produce commands higher prices in the market. This approach supports both environmental conservation and the well-being of farming communities.

To further support human-elephant coexistence, the project includes educational workshops on elephant behavior, migration patterns, and non-violent conflict resolution strategies.

This project is more than just an agricultural initiative—it is a step toward sustainable coexistence between humans and elephants. By empowering farmers with alternative income opportunities, we protect both livelihoods and the natural ecosystem.
